What To Wear For Grouse Shooting Season

How quickly the year passes! We’re already in the dog days of summer, and the Glorious Twelfth beckons. Now that we’re close to grouse shooting season, here’s our guide for what to wear to keep comfortable throughout.

What to Prepare For

The season begins on August 12 and stretches until December 10. This two-month window opens us up to rapidly-changing weather – we move from the last, sultry days of summer, to the crisp of autumn, to the cold of winter. As far as gear goes, this means that you need to be prepared for potentially harsh weather towards the end of season. If you’re doing your shooting at the start of the season, however, you can dress for milder weather. Whenever your trip falls, this guide is here to help you prepare for dressing in grouse shooting season.

Jackets and Coats

A good-quality jacket or coat keeps you warm and dry during the season’s colder months. Look for a jacket that is well-insulated while you’re out on the moors – our ideal jacket or coat is durable and hard-wearing, while soft and comfortable on the inside. For the style-conscious, Derby tweed is always a classic design. A fleece-lined coat is also a good choice for keeping warm, while wax shooting jackets marry function and form. Dark colors, such as olive and green, are always the perfect choice, as they keep you camouflaged out on the moors.

If you’re keeping your hunt to August or September however, we recommend a lighter and more breathable alternative to a jacket or goat, such as gilet.

Layers

If your venture falls in the later part of the season, you’ll need more than a jacket or coat. Layering up is the best option – think jumpers, sweatshirts and knitwear. A high-quality wool blend jumper can keep you warm even in the coldest months.

Trousers

When it comes to grouse shooting, you want a below-the-knee cut that ensures that your boots take the brunt of all that mud and water, keeping your legs dry. Trousers – or breeks – designed specifically for shooting are a practical alternative to loose-fitting or full-length trousers. While perfect for many other environments, those types of trousers tend to merely soak up the water when it comes to grouse shooting.

Footwear

A grouse shooting trip can last for hours, and you’ll want to keep your feet comfortable throughout. You want a pair of footwear that keeps your feet toasty, and that have enough leg guard to keep the mud away on dry days. A reliable pair of wellingtons will never let you down. Another practical option are knee-length boots.

Accessories

When you’ve got your outfit down pat, it’s time to consider the accessories you’ll need. Having the right accessories can help you complete your attire and make it as functionable as it can be. Socks and hats will keep you warm during the winter cold, and make a stylish complement to your outfit.

Now that you’ve got all you need, you can head off and enjoy the glories of grouse shooting season!

Ways To Wear A Dress Shirt Under A Jumper

Wearing a dress shirt under a jumper can be a creative way to make a fashion statement whether you are looking to achieve a casual or formal look. However, you need to understand some fashion dos to be able avoid styling your shirt and jumper wrongly. Read along to find tips to help you create a style powerhouse with your shirt and jumper.

Pick the Right Dress Shirt

To avoid bunching under the jumper, be sure to choose a dress shirt that fits you well in the shoulders, sleeves, and waist. If you can’t find a shirt that is fitted, you can take the one you have to the tailor for fittings. Additionally, it will be beneficial to choose a thin dress if you are trying to achieve a neat, crisp look.

Choose a Short-Sleeve Shirt in Warmer Weather

Besides looking great under a jumper, a short-sleeve dress shirt will keep you cool in the warm weather by reducing the number of layers on your arms. Likewise, it will prevent your shirt from causing lumps under the sweater sleeves.

Wear a Crew Neck Jumper for a Professional Look

Pairing your dress shirt with a crew neck jumper is a great way to maintain a professional appearance for your business meetings. Wearing your jumper and shirt like this will serve you the classic vibe as you walk into the office or conference room. You can pair the look with some slacks and leave the collar of the shirt tucked in if the collar of the jumper is very tight.

Wear a V-neck Jumper With a Tie

When pairing a dress shirt with a jumper, wearing a tie will immediately upgrade the style to a classic professional look. The rectangular shape of the collar of your V-neck jumper will frame the tie neatly. As long as your jumper and shirt fits properly, you will be able to pull off this look cleanly.

Wear Neutral Colors for a Conservative Look

Wearing neutral shades of blue fabric will bring out your professional side more. Choose neutral shades like black, gray, white and the likes for your tie, jumper and shirt. Even though your outfit will still look nice if you pair neutral shades together, avoid wearing the same shade throughout.

Mix Solid Colors With Patterns

If you have a fun personality, mixing solid colors with patterns will help to show your personality. You can choose to wear a patterned shirt with a solid-colored tie or a solid shirt under a patterned jumper. However, don’t wear several patterns in one outfit as it creates quite unpleasant similarities. You can check out our men’s wool jumper and ladies wool jumper.

Tuck Your Shirt

For a date night, presentation at work, or an interview, you can tuck your shirt into your trousers to impress.  Letting your shirt hang out under your jumper is a bit sloppy and will ruin the impression you are trying to make. Ensure that you do the tucking neatly to avoid lumps in your trousers.

Trousers Measurement Guide: How To Find The Right Fit

Wearing the right gear while out in the field is imperative to your comfort and safety. If you’re looking for the perfect pair of trousers for shooting, we’ve put together this trousers measurement guide to let you know what you should look out for. Getting your numerical measurements is rather straightforward, but a good pair of hunting trousers does more than just fit well, they should also work well on both your body and the environment. The features listed below are things you should consider when sizing up the measurement and fit of your trousers.

Elasticated Waist

An elasticated waist gives you freedom of movement, which is essential to hunting. You don’t want to be confined by fabric as you twist and turn. An elasticated waist also helps to secure your thermals and shirt, preventing them from coming untucked. When you measure your waist for your trousers, consider a bit of give, and look for trousers that have both an elasticated waist and a secure closure system. Belt loops are also always a plus.

High Back

When you measure your midsection for your trousers, take into consideration that you’ll likely want a pair with a “high back”. A pair of hunting trousers with a high back provides you with protection and warmth over your kidneys and are a good choice for high seat work. If you’re looking for additional warmth, consider a pair with fleece lining, to keep you warm in the autumn and winter, as well as the crisper days of spring and summer. If you enjoy a hunt in the colder months, consider a sturdy dog coat for your canine companion as well.

Knee-Length Zips

When measuring your legs, consider trouser features that you’ll want to have around your knees. A pair of trousers with knee-length zips are easier to pull off, no matter how wet or muddy you get. If you need a quick change, you have the added convenience of not having to pull your shooting boots off when you take off your trousers.

Articulated and Reinforced Knees

Another thing to look for around the knee-area of your trousers are articulated and reinforced knees. An articulated knee refers to trousers designed with extra material in the knee area, which provides you with more mobility while also preventing your trousers from riding up.

As you can see, while measuring yourself for your trousers, you don’t want anything that’s too tight or that fits too snugly. Always look for a little bit of give for mobility, and added space for material that provides reinforcement.

Durability

Our final tip has to do with material. The best material depends on your usual shooting or hunting conditions. Rough terrain – such as heather – requires a tougher fabric. Waterproof material is also recommended for most environments. Different materials might require a tighter or looser optimal fit, so think about that as well while measuring. Finally, we recommend a fabric that is breathable so that you optimize your comfort while out on the field. The last thing you’ll want to do is be distracted from a hunt because your gear is uncomfortable!

The Definitive Guide To Coarse Fishing

There are 3 types of fishing (also referred to as “angling”): coarse fishing, game fishing and sea fishing. Coarse fishing refers to fishing for any species of fish apart from those that live in the sea, as well as trout and salmon. Game fishing refers specifically to the fishing of trout and salmon. Sea fishing – as it suggests on the tin – refers to the fishing of fish species that live in the sea. Here, we present the definitive guide to coarse fishing.

What is Coarse Fishing?

Coarse fishing is the most popular type of fishing in the United Kingdom. This type of fishing features a “catch and release” approach, which is to say that it is a form of fishing undertaken as a hobby rather than a necessity. People undertake coarse fishing for sport or enjoyment.

Coarse fishing is an immensibly accessible hobby for those in the country, and if you are thinking of taking it up, there are likely several quality tackle shops and fisheries in your area that you could pay a visit to. Most tackle shop owners would be pleased to start you out with some useful pointers, so visiting such a shop is also an opportunity to introduce yourself to your local coarse fishing community.

Types of Coarse Fish

There is no significant scientific difference between coarse and game fish. One noticeable difference, however, is that coarse fish prefer to inhabit warmer and more placid environments. Below is a list of some highly sought after coarse fish species.

  • Bream
  • Grayling
  • Eal
  • Catfish
  • Barbel
  • Chub
  • Dace
  • Carp
  • Perch
  • Gudgeon
  • Grayling
  • Roach
  • Rudd
  • Ruffle

These fish all require a different approach and tactics to catch. Exploring these various approaches over time is one of the most rewarding aspects of coarse fishing.

What You’ll Need

Here, we list down some basic fishing tackle that you’ll require while coarse fishing.

  • Rod and Reel: A fishing rod and a well-balanced reel are the cornerstones of the game!
  • Line: Ideally, your line has a breaking strain of 8 to 10 pounds
  • Floats: Loaded floats are the perfect for this endeavour.
  • Split shot weights are something you can consider if you have only have regular fishing floats, however.
  • Hooks: Beginners can look for hooks that are pre-looped. We recommend a size between 10 to 14.
  • Plummet: This is a weight that you attach to your hook so that you can measure the depth of a lake.
  • Landing net: To help you transfer larger fish to a bank more safely and easily
  • Unhooking mat: To protect the fish while unhooking; remember, coarse fishing is all about “catch and release”. A wet mat helps protect the fish, reducing any friction that could cause harm to its scales and skin.
  • Disgorger: This helps you unhook your fish easily, and to work around hard-to-reach hook holds
  • Scales: To finish off the hunt! Whether you’re participating in match angling or just want that sense of accomplishment, a good pair of scales helps you measure the weight of your catch.

Fishing for All Seasons

Coarse fishing can be enjoyed all year around. Fishing in weather has its own special charm, so if you’re planning your Christmas holidays already, add some layers, such as knitwear and socks, to keep you warm and dry.

  • Driving Cap

With its origin for being drivers’ caps, this flat cap is yet another piece that was used to distinguish the working class and the upper class. The extension of the sides makes the Baker boy a perfect fit for men who want the classic style with some edge. It is a relatively bolder style of flat caps. This driving cap lookalike has an extended brim and rounded crown that makes it striking yet official. This cap has a more rounded and ‘baggier’ look than a flat cap with panels joined in the centre by a button.

Waistcoat With Jeans: 4 Looks For Different Occasions

It has long been believed that the waistcoat belongs solely in formal settings. Consequently, a waistcoat is often worn with a regular suit. Some individuals may even attempt donning a white or black tie to personalise the appearance. However, waistcoats are a part of the cutting-edge informal and formal combination that has revolutionised fashion in recent years. Don’t worry if you’re unsure of how to style a waistcoat with jeans. We’re here to assist you in figuring out how to create various ensembles with waistcoats.

Edgy: Black Waistcoat With Jeans

Would you want to stroll across the city while wearing a waistcoat? Don a printed shirt, your black waistcoat, black slacks, and your black satin jacket. Choose stylish glasses and ruby oxford shoes to complete the ensemble.

On the other hand, if you want to go for a smart-casual style, wearing a dark-blue pair of trousers, a black waistcoat, and a blue shirt with a silver tie would do the trick. Add a handkerchief, if you have one, and a pair of brown loafers to complete the appearance.

As you go along the street, a lot of eyes will be on you. Get the correct shoes, trousers, and waistcoat for the occasion!

Smart Casual: Waistcoat And Jeans With Tie

One of the greatest ways to appear formal is to pair a tie with trousers and a waistcoat. But can you do it effortlessly?

We can assist you if you are unable to do so. Add stylish ties to the waistcoat by pairing it with jeans! Ties are known to make any guy seem formal and smart, and wearing them with jeans is a terrific method to do so. To get a colorful appearance, the tie must have some type of texture, however. Knit and cotton ties would often work in this situation. Include a waistcoat to your clothes to complete the appearance.

This outfit is perfect for a casual day at work or an evening date.

Switch Between Casual & Formal: White Shirt, Waistcoat And Jeans

Each and every guy adores his white shirt. They have this compulsion to wear their white shirt at least once every week, regardless of how old it is. So why would you wear a waistcoat while still wearing a white shirt?

In fact, when you want to seem nautical and preppy, a white shirt paired with off-white colored pants and a navy blue waistcoat is the ideal outfit. A tweed waistcoat over a white shirt and a pair of black pants, on the other hand, would look great if you like the Victorian motif with a bow tie and braces. With this waistcoat as well as shirt ensemble, you’re ready to go!

Casual: Waistcoat With Jeans And Shirt

Waistcoats are seen as formal, whilst jeans are considered casual. Will you be able to create a casual waistcoat attire if you combine both of these outfits?

Actually, you can. All you need to do to create a relaxed appearance is avoid matching colors and glossy textiles, which are associated with formality. Additionally, choose a corduroy or tweed single-breasted waistcoat.

Furthermore, you won’t have to be concerned about the waistcoat being too small or not fitting properly. Put on a pair of slim-fitting jeans, a shirt, and a waistcoat as you need a casual appearance, and you’re ready to leave.

This Is Exactly How You Should Wear Breeks

Knowing the appropriate shooting apparel is essential to blending in at your local shooting club. You should always look your best, regardless of whether certain places have tougher dress codes than others. In order to fit in with the rest of the group, we always advise consulting with your group or the host first. Half the fight is in the appearance, thus we don’t want you to stand out for wearing the incorrect attire. For a style guide on how to wear breeks, keep reading!

What To Wear With Breeks

Full tweed is the way to go if you wish to be the most fashionable person at the shoot or at the range. Tweed should never be mixed, so to get the whole country gentleman appearance, make sure everything of your tweed matches. A three-piece suit with a tweed shooting jacket or blazer, waistcoat, and breeks is an option. If you like a more casual look, you may omit the waistcoat. Try moving about in a waistcoat first before leaving the home since they may sometimes be constrictive, especially for shooting.

Make sure your coats and pants have lots of pockets since these are crucial during a shoot. If the pockets aren’t deep enough to accommodate additional cartridges, you’ll wind up spending more time looking for them in your backpack than actually shooting!

What Accessories To Wear With Breeks

A hat of your choice completes a rural appearance every time. A flat cap is often your finest choice for shooting, and you may match it to your tweed for an even more slick appearance. Make sure you feel at ease wearing it and that you can wear ear protection over it by trying it on before you leave.

In relation to that, remember to wear ear and eye protection as well! Typically, you can purchase them from the club, but if you often go, why not buy a set for yourself? Security first!

A tie is seen as being necessary for the more formal shooting excursions. Try to coordinate it with the checks on your tweed jacket or breeks, or make it a focal point with a striking color or pattern. Leave the slim ties for the workplace; a larger kind of tie works better for shooting.

How To Wear Your Breeks With Socks

Always wear knee-high socks on top of your breeks, ideally with a garter fastened at the top. The top of your socks should then be exposed by folding the garter back over them. You won’t have to spend the whole day tugging up your socks since they won’t be draping down your ankle.

If you are a frequent shooter, it would be wise to invest in a decent pair of socks. A comfy, high-quality pair of socks will make a world of difference while you’re working a long day at a shoot.

Breeks need not be as challenging to wear as they first seem to be. Regular pants may be made considerably more wearable by making only a few minor adjustments. Regardless of whether you’re a professional or a novice shooter, having the correct equipment will make you feel at ease throughout the shoot. Just consider how nicely you will blend in if you wear the appropriate outfit!
